Welcome to the Witty Tech Newbie!

I'm Audrey, and I am a 40-year-old single mother of two amazing sons, a rescue dachshund, and a green cheek conure.  Most of my adult life has been focused on guiding my children on their paths into their adult lives.  Now that they are on their way, it's time to do the same for myself, and have a little fun along the way!

I have a wonderful job woking in an insurance company's finance department.  I've had the opportunity to work with amazing people and always learn something new.  But one thing intimidated me for far too long: TECH!

Have you ever gotten stuck in the cycle of self-doubt?  I know I have! I bought into the myth that IT is for people who are smarter and more serious than I am, people who have all the answers.  But then I got a little advice: 

Sometimes it's about what you know, but more often, it's about finding the answers to what you DON'T know.  

This was a game changer for me that motivated my involvement in Excel projects, training, troubleshooting, and now beginning an IT degree program.  Things I never thought I would do, let alone enjoy!  I don't know exactly where this journey will lead me in my career, but so far I've found myself able to flex my creative muscle, and create more than I thought myself capable of.  More importantly, I'm having fun doing it!  I'm excited for the options ahead and to see what interests end up surprising me.

The Witty Tech Newbie is my way to share an array of IT topics and careers that I come across along my way, from one beginner to another.  If you've thought of tech as intimidating, you're in good company here.  Please know that you're capable of more than you know, and you may just surprise yourself!

Documenting A Day

Microsoft Office Suite is a standard for almost all work and school situations, as well as personal computer purchases.  The suite typically includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access, applications that are incredibly well-known, and commonly used.  However, despite name recognition, the nuances and best uses for each application may not be quite as well-known.  Exposure to different applications varies greatly based on an individual user’s needs.  Word processor, presentation, spreadsheet and database applications each have their own specific functionality that can be best leveraged in different situations.  I had the opportunity to explore these applications while documenting a day in my life. Web/Mobile App Critique

Life can be crazy sometimes!  I’ve just had to look for an easy way to incorporate a few minutes of self-care into my routine to help me relax and keep my focus. I came across a suggestion on the Insight Timer app and decided to try it. Since stress is not an experience unique to me, I wanted to do my review while getting started and share it with all of you.   Insight Timer is a meditation app with an expansive selection of guided meditations, talks, live events, and calming music, all completely free. A premium membership adds available courses. The app could be used as a guest, though the process of setting up an account was very easy, involving a few questions about preferences and experience, to make it personalized. The first option was an intro challenge that introduces a new topic each day, so I didn’t have to overcome paralysis about where to start.
